A question on the popular ITV show ‘The 1% Club’ has left football fans baffled – but can you work out the answer?

The show, hosted by comedian Lee Mack, returned to British TV screens earlier in 2024. If you are not too familiar with the show, the rules are explained below.

According to the Radio Times, “[Episodes] start with 100 contestants hoping to walk away with £100,000, but as the questions become harder, their numbers will dwindle, until the remaining quizzers answer a question that only one per cent of the country got right in the final round.

“Every episode starts with the 100 contestants being given a question that 90 per cent of country answered correctly – those who get the question right move onto the next round, whereas for every contestant who answers incorrectly, £1000 is added to the prize pot.

“Each round gets progressively harder, moving on from a 90 per cent question to an 80 per cent one, 50 per cent and eventually a one per cent question.

“If just one contestant remains and they correctly answer the one percent question, they take home the £100,000 prize pot.”

Now that’s clear, let’s see if you can work out the answer from a question on Wednesday night’s episode aired on ITV X.

The ‘10% question’ read: “What is the unusual pattern that links all these football clubs?”

The clubs referred to were Charlton Athletic, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Northampton Town.

At first glance, you may be wondering, ‘What is the correlation between these random teams?’ but you will kick yourself once you find out the answer.

Is it something to do with historical results, former players, trophies won or something entirely different? You can find out below.

Viewers were quick to give their thoughts on social media with one revealing the pattern.

One fan instantly spotted the correct answer, they said: "Same letters at start and end.”

Another joked: "These days Charlton Athletic are playing more like Carshalton Athletic."

While a third commented: "Let’s not forget Scotland: Kilmarnock, East Fife, Celtic..."

A fourth exclaimed: "So Easy that…"

This wasn't the first time football fans had their say on the show this week. On Tuesday another football-related question left them stumped.
