Gary Lineker leaves Wayne Rooney and the rest of BBC panel speechless with brutal comment that nobody saw coming

Gary Lineker 'violated' Wayne Rooney with a brutal comment about his management in the BBC Studio at the FA Cup final.

Manchester City trailed Crystal Palace by a single goal after a brilliant breakaway by the Eagles was finished by Eberechi Eze in the first half.

City fans were left enraged when Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson wasn't sent off for denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity, after which he saved Omar Marmoush's penalty and made a string of impressive stops before the break.

With Palace 1-0 up at the time, BBC Sport studio pundit Micah Richards asked Rooney what he would say to his players if he were in Oliver Glasner's position with a one-goal lead at half time.

Lineker, in his presenter role in the studio, said that Rooney's teams "were never one up" at the break.

One social media user said Lineker had 'violated' Rooney with the stinging analysis.

Rooney has been taking his first few steps in management over the last few years and hasn't quite found his groove.

He started out in a difficult situation at Derby County before returning to DC United, where he saw out his legendary playing career in Major League Soccer.

The MLS original club has been in poor shape on the pitch too so Rooney needed to pick his next club wisely. He ended up at a listing Birmingham City instead.

They were relegated shortly after his departure before bouncing back at the first time of asking under Chris Davies, and Plymouth Argyle will be looking for the same response after they too were relegated from the Championship not long after the end of Rooney's tenure.

But the former Manchester United man won't have been expecting to catch friendly verbal fire from his fellow ex-England striker on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Wembley.

The face of Glenn Murray said it all and Richards was there too.

Rumours of Lineker's possible exit from the BBC have ramped up in recent weeks. The outspoken anchor has been no stranger to controversy thanks to his willingness to be an irritant to certain sections of society and an ill-advised recent social media post only made matters worse.

Lineker deleted the post, which addressed zionism and included the image of a rat, but had to make an apology.

"Whilst I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out on humanitarian issues, including the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, I also know that how we do so matters," he said.

"I take full responsibility for this mistake. That image does not reflect my views. It was an error on my part for which I apologise unreservedly."
