A controversial Twitter thread has ranked Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard - with Scholes being ranked bottom by a distance.

The three English midfielders have gone down as legends thanks to their performances with Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

Twitter user @K56100212K has offered a variety of statistics and has decided that Gerrard is the best of the three, with Lampard in second and Scholes rock bottom.

The thread starts with looking at the attacking stats and it's a category Lampard dominates in.

Lampard mastered the art of being a goalscoring midfielder and became Chelsea's all-time top goalscorer during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Gerrard isn't too far behind but Scholes is bottom by a distance due to playing much deeper for most of his career.

Scholes' best qualities were his passing but the thread explains that he is 'really behind in the creative measures'.

Defensive stats are also compared and it's Gerrard who leads the way, as expected given his battling performances as Liverpool captain.

It's decided that Gerrard leads the way in terms of all around play, while Lampard dominates the scoring charts.

The next comparison is each man's performance in cup finals and it's no surprise that Gerrard comes out on top.

His performances for The Reds in the 2005 Champions League final and 2006 FA Cup final are legendary, with the former England captain inspiring the victories almost single handed.

Scholes, however, is criticised for missing three of United's four Champions League finals during his time at the club.

A slew of other stats are also compared but the thread ends with Gerrard being named the best while Scholes 'became a legend when he retired'.

It's also added that Scholes should not be included in the debate of who is the best.

Who do you think is the best midfielder out of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes?
