Tony Kroos has broken a new record as a German international after his superb performance against Sweden in the group stages of the World Cup .

Germany had their back against the ropes for the first half of the game. They piled on the pressure, but were left exposed at the back multiple times during the Group F clash.

Sweden attacker Ola Toivonen opened the scoring with a deflected lob inside the box, but the Germans bounced right back into the match in the second half, Marco Reus levelling for the side, before in the dying embers of the game, that man Kroos struck a delightful free-kick into the top corner from an acute angle to seal all three points for Germany.

But his fine, game-winning strike is just the tip of the iceberg, as we can see from these stats.

The midfielder made 144 touches in the game, a record for a German player in a World Cup game since 1966.

Users on social media were quick to pile on the praise for the Real Madrid player.

Germany have South Korea left to face in their group, a team who were practically knocked out the competition to Mexico yesterday. They'll need to win that by more than two goals and hope Mexico lose their fixture against Sweden to stand a chance of progressing at the top of the table.

The Germans may be back on track but their defensive frailties are there for all to see. How do you think they'll fare at his summer's World Cup? Let us know in the comments section.
