Martin Odegaard is not joining Manchester City on loan despite a cheeky Real Sociedad announcement.

The Spanish side released a statement claiming the Norwegian would be joining Pep Guardiola's side on loan in January.

However, many soon realised that it was the Spanish equivalent of April Fool's Day and the announcement was a ruse.

The statement read:

"Real Sociedad have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the loan of Martin Odegaard. The player is set to stay at Manchester City until the end of the season.

"The txuri urdin club wants to thank and offer recognition for the job done by Martin. He has shown great professionalism, dedication and loyalty to this club and we wish him well for the future.

"We are forced to take this difficult decision in order to avoid possible media comments for the next six months. What a relief!"

Despite the initial reaction, the statement didn't add up.

Odegaard is currently on loan at Sociedad from Real Madrid so it would be his parent club making the announcement.

He's had a strong season so far, with four goals and five assists in La Liga.

It didn't stop City fans getting excited at the thought of signing the 21-year-old.

It would have been some good news for City fans to see after last night's loss to Wolves.

City had Ederson sent off in the first half but were 2-0 up thanks to a Raheem Sterling double.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo's side rallied and goals from Adama Traore, Raul Jimenez and Matt Doherty gave them a 3-2 victory over the champions.

It now leaves City 14 points behind Liverpool and their chances of retaining the Premier League look all but over.

January reinforcements are needed but Guardiola is insistent on sticking with the squad he has.

When asked about midfield signings in January, Guardiola said on Boxing Day per The Express:

"I don't think we're going to do anything in this position, I don't think we will sign anyone.

"Maybe I will change my mind it depends on the next six months, but I have other priorities and I don't think I'm going to buy because I have enough.

"Bernardo can play there, Phil is there, we have (Ilkay) Gundogan, we have Kevin (De Bruyne) so I don't think we will do anything in this position.

"That is my thought today, we will see at the end of the season."

Do you think City will strengthen in January?
