Max Verstappen didn't shy away from giving his thoughts on the FIA's decision to suspend the Belgian Grand Prix due to rainfall.

The 100th anniversary of the Belgian Grand Prix was plagued by severe weather at the Spa-Francorchamps and after a Formula 3 event had to be abandoned due to the conditions, the Formula One race was also affected.

Race control delivered a red flag after the formation lap on intermediate tyres as rain continued to pour down, the decision made by the FIA due to most drivers reporting "poor visibility" behind the safety car.

Polesetter Lando Norris said he could not "see a lot behind the safety car" and he could not "imagine what it's like for everyone else" when in discussion with McLaren race engineer Will Joseph.

The start procedure could not take place and so drivers returned to the pitlanes in their cars.

With further heavy rain expected, it could mean that the race does not start until 4pm because of the delay.

But reigning F1 world champion Verstappen did not agree with the call. Speaking on his team radio, the Red Bull driver expressed his frustration and revealed his solution for the wet conditions.

"Well that's just a bit silly," Verstappen said on radio, which was captured by Sky Sports.

"I mean, you should just run a few laps, like chillax, Jesus. They're way too cautious, now the heavy rain is coming and then it's gonna be a few hours delay.

“We just need to do a few laps. They're being far too cautious.”

The situation has happened before at Spa as in 2021, drivers only managed to complete two laps behind the safety car before a red flag for heavy rain halted the race and gave Verstappen a bizarre victory.

What happens if a Grand Prix is suspended in F1?

If the weather does not improve and the race cannot take place at all, it will not be classified and no points are handed out.

However, if drivers are able to complete more than two laps but less than 75% of the race, half points are awarded based on the positions at the time.

In the event of 75% of the race distance being completed (33 laps) - full points are due as the final standings are taken from the last completed lap prior to the red flag.

There is a typically a three-hour period to get the race done but in news that all F1 fans were desperate for, race control confirmed that it would resume at 16:20 local time and start behind the safety car with a minimum of two laps.
