Lewis Hamilton Takes Unwanted Ferrari Record After US Grand Prix

The seven-time champion has failed to impress since his move from Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton has set yet another unwanted record at Ferrari following the United States Grand Prix.

Following a relatively calm drive, reigning Formula One champion Max Verstappen rounded off a perfect weekend at the Circuit of Americas with a win in the United States Grand Prix.

After converting his pole position finish into a win in Saturday's sprint race, the Dutchman did the exact same on Sunday's race, shortening the gap to McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on the Drivers' Championship table.

Norris did his best to limit the damage Verstappen inflicted on his championship lead as he finished second in Texas, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc put in a Driver of the Day performance to finish the race in third.

But while Leclerc received praise for his impressive drive on Sunday, his teammate Lewis Hamilton had a less exciting day as he set a Ferrari record that he will want to quickly forget.

Following on from a fourth place finish in Saturday's sprint race, Hamilton qualified in fifth for the main race but managed to gain a place and once again finish in fourth in Sunday's main race.

Although this is not necessarily a bad result for the Brit, who has been having a difficult first season with Ferrari, it now means he takes the record of the longest time for a Ferrari driver to get a podium finish.

Having now competed in 19 races since his Ferrari debut without a Grand Prix podium, he has gone the longest time without a top three finish of any Ferrari driver in Formula One history.

Ever since Hamilton announced his shock move from Mercedes, where he won six of his seven Driver's Championship titles, to join Ferrari, expectations on the British driver were high.

However, apart from a win at the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race, the 40-year-old has failed to live up to the hype and is currently on track for what many would consider to be his worst-ever season.

As it stands, Hamilton is sixth in the Drivers' Championship standings, equalling his worst finish in 2022, with a total of 142 points, 50 behind teammate Leclerc and 204 away from Championship leader Piastri.

His poor form has led to some rumours that he could retire at the end of the season or even be replaced if Ferrari feel they can bring in a stronger driver, but it currently appears that he will continue to driver for the Italian team next year.
