American cyclist Chloe Dygert has been involved in a horrible accident during the UCI Road World Championships.

Dygert, a former 10-time world champ herself, went flying over a roadside rails during a sharp corner resulting in her being rushed to hospital in a stretcher.

23-year-old Dygert was 26 seconds ahead of the checkpoint during the individual time trials - meaning she was absolutely flying though the Imola course.

But as she came racing down a hill, she appeared to slightly misjudge a sharp corner.

Unable to brake in time, Dygert's bike began wobbling uncontrollably and she approached the steel rails.

It wasn't long before Dygert eventually ran out of road and she went crashing into the rails and disappeared into the bushes behind them.

Event paramedics were quick to attend the scene as It looked as if Dygert's left leg had taken the brunt of the damage - and scans in the hospital later confirmed the worst.

The American fan favourite had, in fact, broken her left leg and suffered a deep laceration to her knee.

"Currently we don't know the prognosis yet. I know for a fact that she was flown to a hospital in Bologna and that she is being seen by doctors in the emergency room now," Dygert's Olympic gold medal-winning coach Kristin Armstrong said.

"They were all concerned with a deep laceration to her leg, where she hit that guard rail, it's horrifying and sickening, and it's going to be a hard recovery for Chloe.

"This is definitely a serious accident but she will look back on it and hopefully be able to say that she was lucky in a lot of ways. It could have been more serious."

Footage of the incident quickly emerged on social media with fans sending their best wishes to the recovering Dygert.
