Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the second Ashes Test after he dined at a restaurant where one of the patrons tested positive for Covid-19.

It's understood the Australian captain was sitting on the table directly next to the person when they found out they were positive.

Cummins then left the venue straight away and contacted Cricket Australia to notify them.

The fast bowler, who starred in his captaincy debut during the opening Test, has since returned a negative test but has been ordered to self-isolate for seven days under South Australian regulations.

Michael Nesar has come into the side to earn his first Baggy Green.

As for the captaincy, former skipper Steve Smith has lead the side out at Adelaide Oval with Travis Head slotting in as vice.

"It is a huge honour obviously," Smith told Fox Sports.

"It's been a pretty interesting morning, there's been a bit going on.

"I feel for Patty missing this game and we will try and lead one from how we started last week."

Meanwhile, Cummins will be forced to watch the Aussies take on the English from the comfort of his own home.

"Everyone's obviously extremely, extremely disappointed. We worked very closely with SA Health overnight and I think it's a sign of the times that we're in ... We just tried to establish the facts and work through with the authorities here in South Australia," Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said.

"I would say that Pat has done absolutely nothing wrong and was working completely to the protocols that our medical team prescribed which was consistent with the environment here in South Australia.

"Our main focus was working with SA Health and not only taking advice of authorities but also having a mind to what it means for the continuity of the tour because what we do know is Pat was a close contact, and we want to make sure we can continue with the tour.

"So the steps that we've taken and advice from SA health is consistent with anyone else in the community, and is also a prudent approach to keep the tour going."

Hockley added: "We tried to strike a balance. We always know there's a level of risk. I just think we've been extremely unlucky.

"With Pat, it's just a case of wrong place at the wrong time and if you look at whole balance of managing wellbeing, the alternative is to lock everyone down completely for the whole tour which we've learnt over 18 months can have other consequences in terms of mental health and well being.

"I think it's just a really unfortunate, disappointing situation."
