A deal would likely see the defender arrive in 2023 rather than this campaign, even if it is agreed in January as the Bundesliga side are determined to hang on to him.
In the latest update in this potential transfer, Gvardiol has delivered a major hint over a move to the Blues.

Speaking to Index Sport he said: "I'm happy in Leipzig, I still have a lot to learn and work on myself.

"I have people who deal with it, I didn't think about a transfer. We'll see what happens in the winter."
So while it might not be instant Gvardiol could end up a Chelsea player with his future uncertain.
He also spoke about his role in the Croatia national team: "I wouldn't say I'm irreplaceable in the national team.
"Every day is proving, you have to work, prove yourself and the best will compete for the match (against Denmark)."
