Anthony Taylor to remain in charge of Chelsea games as Blues wait to make Premier League complaint

Anthony Taylor's refereeing performance on Sunday proved to be controversial.

Anthony Taylor will still be able to referee Chelsea games this season as the club wait to make a complaint about the official, according to reports.

The Blues’ clash with London rivals Spurs on Sunday saw the two sides draw 2-2 in a feisty and hotly contested affair at Stamford Bridge.

Referee Taylor, who has a history of controversial decisions when it comes to Chelsea, was criticised for his performance by manager Thomas Tuchel.

He and counterpart Antonio Conte were both sent off by the official at the end of the match, with the managerial duo having a couple of altercations on the touchline that evening.

There is a feeling that both of Spurs’ goals should not have counted, with Kai Havertz being fouled in the buildup to the first and Marc Cucurella having his hair pulled by Cristian Romero just moments before the second.

After the match, Tuchel was asked about fans’ concerns of Taylor, in which he replied: “Not only the fans.

“You know the players, they know what’s going on when they are on the pitch. They know it.”

He was also questioned on whether his players are worried when the referee is appointed for Chelsea games, and he responded with: “Yeah, of course.”

As a result, the German boss is being investigated by the FA for his comments on the official.

Many fans have been critical of Taylor in the aftermath of the match, but the Telegraph have reported that Chelsea themselves will wait for the report on the game before deciding if they will make a complaint about the referee.

Such a report will be issued by a new independent panel that consists of ‘referee assessors’.

Throughout the course of this season, Premier League clubs will receive independent reports on a weekly basis about officiating standards.

They will be composed by three former players, a representative from the league and an official from PGMOL.

Chelsea will not receive the report on the Spurs clash until the end of the week.

The Daily Mail have reported that there are no plans to prevent Taylor from refereeing more Blues matches this season.

Tuchel and Conte were both charged by the FA after the match for their behaviour on the touchline at Stamford Bridge.

A statement read: “Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte have both been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3, following the Premier League fixture between Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 14 August 2022.

“It is alleged that the behaviour of both managers was improper following the end of the fixture.

“Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte have until Thursday 18 August 2022 to provide their respective responses.”
