The White House have posted a statement on behalf of Donald Trump after controversy surrounding the President's appearance at the US Open men's singles final.

Trump was in attendance at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Carlos Alcaraz versus Jannik Sinner - a final which Alcaraz won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The final was due to get underway at 2pm ET, but was twice delayed before the players eventually got the action underway at around 2:45pm ET.

When the match began, thousands of people were still waiting outside the arena to get in.

US Open organisers confirmed that the final had to be delayed because of security provisions surrounding Trump's entry into the stadium.

Many fans outside, though, told Sky Sports that they had not been told of the President's impending arrival.

Meanwhile, various clips on social media showed Trump being booed by sections of the crowd as he performed a salute prior to the final getting underway.

Former British tennis star Laura Robson, working for Sky Sports, noted on their live broadcast: "They've just shown Trump on the big screen, lots of boos."

S.V. Date, a senior White House correspondent for the Huffington Post, added that there were a 'wave of boos' for the President during the pre-match national anthem.

He said that there were 'mixed cheers and boos' when Trump appeared on screen for the first time.

Reports ahead of the final claimed that US Open broadcasters had been asked by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to not highlight any crowd reaction to the President.

The White House, through its Rapid Response account, has now posted an extraordinary - if not unexpected -statement to Twitter, in which they called out the 'Fake News Losers'.

"All these Fake News Losers do is lie, because their pea-sized brains have been irreversibly destroyed by TDS ['Trump Derangement Syndrome']," the account, which has 1.2 million followers, posted.

Above a video of Trump - in which a mixed reaction can be heard - the statement ends: "This is how it aired on TV. Note the cheers."
