Manchester United Handed Boost In Pursuit Of Next Permanent Manager

Ralf Rangnick is only in charge at Old Trafford until the end of the season and United's chances of getting one target has been helped.

Manchester United have been handed a boost to hire their first choice manager for next season, after Ralf Rangnick's time as interim boss comes to an end.

Rangnick enjoyed his side's best half of football on Wednesday night, in the 3-1 win over Brentford, although it did follow one of their worst.

The German is only in charge until the end of the season, with a couple names already mentioned as potentially their next permanent manager.

When the job first became available, after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking, Zinedine Zidane was one target for the club but the three times Champions League winning manager wasn't interested.

However, according to Marca, the former Real Madrid boss is set to move to PSG in the summer, something that has been rumoured before, meaning United would be free to get Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino was also heavily linked with dumping Paris for Manchester, after Solskjaer's sacking, and the Qatar owned club would then have gone for Zidane.

With the powers that be at Old Trafford not moving for the former Tottenham Hotspur boss, there was no need for the Ligue 1 leaders to go after a replacement.

However the report says that things are now different and it looks likely Zidane will move to the Parc des Princes in the summer, as part of a 'rebuild.'

PSG are expecting to lose Kylian Mbappe to Zidane's old club Real in the summer and the board believe that the 49-year-old is the man to galvanise them following the loss.

Pochettino was reportedly game to move back to England, and join United, in November, following Solskjaer's sacking, despite being PSG manager less than a year.

The former Spurs boss took over from Thomas Tuchel in January 2021 but failed to win the league last season, or the Champions League.

He is looking good to win his first league title as a manager this summer but has been criticised for his tactics and failure to get the best out of the attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Mbappe.

As well as Pochettino and Zidane, United have also been linked with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and Leicester City's Brendan Rodgers, as they attempt to finally appoint the right man for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
