"You have your eyes closed..." - James Maddison calls out John Terry's comments after Chelsea’s 4-1 over Tottenham

He didn't hold back

James Maddison called out John Terry after Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.

Nine-player Tottenham fell to a 4-1 defeat against Chelsea courtesy of a Nicolas Jackson hat-trick. However, that only begins to tell part of the story.

Though five goals were scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, another five were ruled out by VAR, while there were two red cards (and could have been several more) and nine VAR checks across the game.

Nevertheless, former Chelsea captain Terry took to social media after the game to celebrate his side’s crucial win over an unbeaten Spurs.

Terry posted a video on Instagram of him and his wife Toni standing on chairs, drinking tequila and singing Cutting Crew’s “I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight”.

He captioned the clip: “When Chelsea beat Spurs 4-1 on a school night and the tequila comes out, and you end up dancing and singing on the bar.”

However, Tottenham midfielder Maddison, who was forced off prematurely after sustaining an injury against the Blues, fired back at the former England skipper.

Maddison said: “Jesus, u have ur eyes closed when it was 11 v 11 first 15 JT?”

Tottenham were in complete control during the game’s opening, taking the lead after only six minutes through Dejan Kulusevski before Heung-min Son had a disallowed goal confirmed as offside.

After the game Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou told Sky Sports: "It is pretty hard to process. It is almost impossible to analyse the game because it just seemed to get out of control for large parts of it. Disappointed by the result but really proud of the players, they gave everything and that is the positive we will take.

"We were very close to getting an equaliser a couple of times and it shows their spirit. It was just a bridge too far today.

"I thought we started really well, scored a great goal and inches away from another. The red card affected the game, I felt like I was standing around waiting for things to happen, with VAR intervention. It felt like a lot of standing around."
