England Fans Vote For Graham Potter As Gareth Southgate Replacement

After another disappointing performance and result against Italy in the Nations League, England fans are starting to wonder if Gareth Southgate is the right man to take the team forward. 

England couldn’t break down a stubborn Italy defence as they played out a 0-0 draw at Molineux on Saturday.

After their latest draw, Southgate’s side are still searching for their first win of their Nations League campaign, they currently sit bottom of the table with two points from three games. 

Fans were not happy with the Three Lions’ recent performances and #SouthgateOut was trending on Twitter not long after the final whistle went. 

We decided to put out a poll on Twitter for England fans to choose their next manager when Southgate leaves. The options were, Brighton manager Graham Potter, former Burnley boss Sean Dyche, Roma boss Jose Mourinho and former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Dyche and Pochettino were convincingly out voted as both finished with 13% and 18.1% respectively. Potter was the winner as he had 39.2% of the votes compared to Mourinho’s 29.7%. 

Potter has been doing a great job at the Amex Stadium as he joined the club in 2019. In the 21/22 campaign, he led Brighton to a ninth place finish after a strong end to the season that included a 4-0 win against Manchester United.

The 47-year-old has previously been linked with moves to Arsenal and Tottenham but a move never materialised as he was solely concentrated on the project he has at Brighton. 

But if England come calling, Potter may find the opportunity too big to turn down. 

Southgate has restored a lot of belief within England fans after leading the team to a forth place finish in the 2018 World Cup, he then backed that up by leading the team to third place in the Nations League in 2019 before an agonising penalty shoot out defeat against Italy in last year's Euro denied Southgate the chance to win England's first major trophy since 1966.

The recent form is a worry for all England fans, especially with the 2022 World Cup kicking off in Qatar later on in the year. 

With a squad full of young and exciting talents such as Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Declan Rice, along with experienced internationals such as Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Kyle Walker. Fans will be expecting another deep run in a major tournament, most fans will think the squad is good enough to go all the way.

Will Southgate prove people wrong and bring home the World Cup? Only time will tell.
