Ederson rushed out of his goal like a madman and somehow avoided punishment after getting it horribly wrong.

The Brazilian shotstopper operates as a sweeper keeper for Manchester City and regularly comes out of his box to sniff out counter attacks.

On this occasion, however he judged it badly wrong and completely took out RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer when the ball was fed in behind.

John Stones was also keeping up with the Austrian and on the cover, making Ederson's decision to come charging out even more baffling.

But incredibly, there was no form of punishment dished out to the former Benfica man - not even a yellow card or free-kick.

Instead former Chelsea striker Timo Werner was booked for his immediate protests towards the referee.

Fans erupted with reaction over the surprise call, with one writing: "Nah this ref isn’t even hiding City bought him, Ederson literally took out the player."

A second said: "Shockingly poor from Ederson. He’s been a liability on a number of occasions this season. Passing has even been below par. Should have been a foul."

Another opined: "Ederson didn’t touch the ball at all and just completely wiped out Laimer who was through. Who gets a card? Timo Werner for complaining."

A fourth weighed in: "If any outfielder made the sort of tackle Ederson just made they'd get at least a yellow card. Simply touching the ball doesn't mean you can fly in at full speed with a high foot with your body fully off the ground."

A final user added: "Ederson all the way out, doesn't play the ball and clatters into Laimer. No foul and then Werner is booked for rightfully complaining the decision. This referee team is having a terrible game."

City went 1-0 up in the Champions League round of second leg clash courtesy of an Erling Haaland penalty. A VAR review deemed that Benjamin Henrichs had handled the ball inside the area when Rodri won a header from a corner.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man might just have got off with one in the dying embers of the first leg, when there was no VAR check on what looked like a handball.

Haaland made no mistake from the spot and 19 seconds after he doubled City's lead, reacting quickest to head home after Kevin De Bruyne's rasping strike hit the crossbar.

There were suspicions of a foul on goalkeeper Janis Blaswich but it was not given.

And the big Norwegian completed a fifth City hat-trick on the stroke of half-time, being in the right place at the right time as a defender kicked the ball against him on the goal-line after Ruben Dias hit the post with a header.

Haaland is the fastest player to hit 30 goals in the Champions League, managing the tally in just 25 games.

Captain Ilkay Gundogan made it 4-0 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate with a crisp left-footed finish just after half-time, before Haaland smashed in another two to bring his tally to five.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has hit 39 in all competitions, smashing City's record seasonal tally.

Kevin De Bruyne curled in a sublime strike in stoppage time to make it 7-0 to City and cap off a stunning night of football.
