Gary Neville's comments about Arsenal's title chances re-emerge after Manchester City defeat

Mikel Arteta's team were eight points clear after winning the north London derby but Neville wasn't impressed with their title chances.

Gary Neville might be owed an apology by some fans, after his comments about Arsenal's Premier League title chances re-emerged following their loss to Manchester City.

It was on January 15th, exactly a month before Wednesday night's game, that the Gunners increased their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

They defeated rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby, historically a tricky tie, to go eight points clear of City, just a day after Pep Guardiola's team had lost to their local rivals Manchester United, after Bruno Fernandes' controversial goal.

With City losing a high pressure game and Arsenal winning one, it marked the moment for many that showed Arteta's team could go on to be crowned champions.

Not for Neville though, the Sky Sports pundit picked that moment to say that he didn't think the trophy would be heading to the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking from the commentary booth after full time at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, the former England full back was asked if Arsenal would win the league, answering, "No. But I said Leicester wouldn't win the league. They won't win the league.

“Manchester City will win the league, and I think Man Utd will finish second, and I know that will annoy Arsenal fans!”

It certainly didn't go down well with Arsenal supporters, and it may have had something to do with them calling for him to never commentate on their games again.

Fortunately for those fans, they got to listen to Clive Tyldesley and Ally McCoist on Wednesday, but unfortunately they were commentating on a defeat for the north Londoners.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland secured a 3-1 win for City and took them above their rivals at the top of the league.

It meant the hosts had picked up just one point out of a possible nine in their past three games, having lost to Everton and drawn with Brentford, and it left some talking about Neville's previous comments.

"They cooked Gary Neville for saying this by the way," one fan pointed out.

"Gary Neville doesn’t sound like a crazy hater now does he? Start apologising," another added.

A third reckons Arsenal are doing their best to prove the ex United man right, saying, "Nah I can't believe they proved Gary Neville right for f**s sake."

A fourth thinks some owe Neville an apology, stating, "I wonder whether Troopz will send Gary Neville an apology video if they don't win the league?"

With another replying, "Everything Gary Neville said about Arsenal was correct he deserves all of your apologies."

Arsenal fans will still be hoping they can win the title, and remain level on points with their rivals, only behind due to a much inferior goal difference.

They are still five points clear of third place United, and have a game in hand over both Manchester clubs, but do still have to play City at the Etihad.

It will be interesting to see if Neville actually gets his prediction right or not, but for now his words are being looked on a lot more favourably a month later.
