One England player reportedly turned up overweight as the team's preparation ahead of an Ashes horror show against Australia was revealed.

In the latest Ashes series, Australia was dominant from start to finish as they sealed victory before Christmas by going 3-0 up after victories in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Brendon McCullum's men made it 3-1 by winning the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the Aussies sealed a 4-1 victory after a triumph in Sydney.

In the middle of the series, England players came under fire after a trip to the Queensland town of Noosa, which was described as a 'glorified stag do'.

According to the BBC, several players, including Joe Root, stayed away from the bars and instead spent time with their families.

However, it was claimed that 'some members of the team followed two days of drinking in Brisbane with four more in Noosa - six in total'.

Now, it has been claimed that one England player turned up to the series 'overweight'.

According to The Telegraph, one senior player 'was sent to Perth earlier than planned because he turned up on tour overweight'.

It has been claimed that the unamed player was 'not alone in being considered unfit'.

England's bowling coach David Saker was said to be 'shocked' by the new generation's approach to fitness and conditioning compared to 'the old guard'.

SPORTbible has reached out to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for comment.

Reflecting on a disappointing showing, McCullum said: "I've a firm conviction in a lot of my methods. I'm not against evolution and not against progress. I encourage that across all sports, not just cricket. And all aspects of life as well. So I'm not against that.

"However, you need to stand for something. You need to believe in your methods and you need to believe in how you go about things."

He added: "For me in the job as coach, you need to have an influence over how the environment runs and to be in charge of a lot of those decisions that are made when the pressure is on.

"So as long as that remains, I'm open to progress. I'm open to evolution and some nipping and tucking, but without being ultimately able to steer the ship maybe there is someone better."
