Stuart Broad slammed an England batter for exposing Ben Stokes to Mitchell Starc following his woeful dismissal on the first day of the second Test.

The Ashes resumed on Thursday following England's crushing eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the first Test.

England won the toss and opted to bat, posting 325 for the loss of nine wickets - with Joe Root scoring his first century down under.

Root remains unbeaten on 135 alongside Jofra Archer, who hit a quick-fire 32 before stumps.

Zak Crawley made 76 after bagging a pair in the first Test, while Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope went out for ducks.

As for Harry Brook, he made 31 off 33 balls before being dismissed by Starc, who ended up with an impressive six wickets.

Brook edged a wide ball to Steve Smith in second slip in the 40th over.

The tourists were going nicely, with Brook and Root building a commanding partnership.

Brook's dismissal brought out Stokes, who was run out for 19.

Speaking after the Yorkshireman's dismissal, Broad bemoaned the 26-year-old's shot that left Stokes exposed to Starc.

The England legend delivered a brutal on-air assessment of Brook, questioning his decision making.

"(Harry Brook) has played 31 Test matches. He's not someone starting out his Test match career," he began on 7Cricket.

"And to me now, we're getting to the situation of, is he recognising the game scenario? That is such a crucial thing about Test match cricket."

Broad added: "Is Harry Brook aware of what's happening at that time in the Test match? And today we're getting to the twilight period or into the twilight period. Australia bring Mitch Starc back... their best bowler. The partnership is growing and the first ball he faces off him, he plays a loose drive.

"And on top of that you then expose your captain Stokes, who's struggling against Starc to Starc in the twilight period. And to me, that... there needs to be a couple of questions marks over that."

Brook registered a half-century (52) in the first innings of the first Test before failing to score in the second innings as England were skittled out for 164.

If he bats again in the second Test, he'll be hoping for a bigger contribution to help England draw level in the Ashes.
