The ball went missing right before the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final — here's what happened

Luckily, AAMI was there to save the day.

If you’re one of the 3.96 million Australians who tuned into the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final over the weekend, or one of roaring fans, witnessing the game live at the MCG, you’ll know that this is the biggest day of the Australian sporting calendar and is anything but clanger-proof.

This year once again, the prized match ball was the poster child for this clanger. Despite the safest of plans, security that were on the clock from dusk till dawn, and the unwavering eyes of footy legends Kevin Bartlett and Robert Dipper Dipierdomenico, the match ball once again went missing.

However, thanks to AAMI, the biggest clanger of the day was adverted as they rescued the ball minutes before the first bounce.

AAMI are no rookies when it comes to rescuing the match ball and for the past two years they have been on case, securing the ball and preventing disaster on the biggest day in September. So, when AFL CEO Andrew Dillion called, AAMI answered with a crack team of Australian legends.

From Lee Lin Chen alerting the nation, the Inspired Unemployed boys running rampant on the streets, and AFLW legend Darcy Vacsio being the eyes in the sky, it was safe to say the hunt for the illusive match day ball was on.

When a legend like Tony ‘Plugger’ Lockett, a man who could find the goals from anywhere, can’t find the ball, you know we are in strife However fortunately for us AAMI Ambassadors Trent Cotchin & Mon Conti were back in the AAMI control room, crunching the numbers and looking for clues, with all signs pointing to the MCG.

With the opening siren fast approaching, our AAMI staff dodged clothing racks following Katy’s flawless performance to find the missing treasure. Buried in the most hidden of corners within the historic G, lay the red beacon of hope. AAMI had once again done what they do best and come to the rescue.

As the fired-up, packed-out crowd at the G roared at the sight of the Sherrin being escorted onto the field, the whole country was assured that AAMI had prevented yet another clanger.

If AAMI can come to the rescue of the biggest sporting event on the Aussie calendar, you can be sure they can be trusted when it comes to your own unforeseen clangers. Clangers happen, but when they do, It’s luck you’re with AAMI.
