UFC are set to introduce a new weight division, according to Rafael Fiziev.

UFC are planning to introduce a new weight division in what would be a major shake-up.

The UFC currently have eight men's weight classes, ranging from flyweight to heavyweight.

In 2011, the promotion added the bantamweight and featherweight divisions into the UFC.

A year later, they introduced the flyweight division.

But it has been over 10 years since the UFC brought in a new weight division.

However, that wait could be coming to an end, according to UFC star Rafael Fiziev, who claims a new weight category is in the works.

Fiziev told Russian outlet Ushatayka that the UFC are set to introduce a 165lbs weight class.

The super-lightweight/junior welterweight division would fit between the lightweight and welterweight divisions and diminish the weight disparity.

There's currently 15lbs between the lightweight and welterweight divisions.

Fiziev said: "This is not a rumour, this is already for sure as far as I know. I heard that this is already true and even they have already fought, they even identified something there, I heard. Yes."

Asked about potentially joining the new division, the 30-year-old added: "I feel good at [155]. I ate pasta during the week of the fight. I ate in Fight Week, even before the weigh-in. I've never had any issue with this. I just, out of discipline, sat down well before as I got a hold of it after the fight.

"Now, the experience has already come where you can restrain yourself where you need to not get ahold of something for the night. You don't have to eat 10 snickers. That's why it's become much easier to lose weight in my last four fights. I generally lose weight like this, that's why [165], no."

Conor McGregor, who has competed at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight in the UFC, could be one of the contenders to challenge for the newly-minted 165lbs title.

He could also have the chance to make UFC history by winning titles in three weight divisions.
