Once a Manchester United flop and then not that much better at Newcastle United, Gabriel Obertan has now left English football, remarkably after eight years of being totally unremarkable. He has a new team.

Sir Alex Ferguson had a fairly decent career at Manchester United, successful one might even say, but even he got some things wrong and the signing of Gabriel Obertan was certainly one.

The French winger was a relatively unknown quantity when he signed from Bordeaux in the summer of 2009 and definitely fell in the Bebe pile of transfers, actually signing a year before the Portuguese player.

After two years at Old Trafford, in which he managed to play 28 games in all competitions scoring once, he moved to Newcastle.

Life in the North East was slightly better with the 28 year-old lasting five seasons and playing 76 games, although his goals to game ratio was no better, bagging three times in total.

After a year in Russia the winger returned to the Championship last season with Wigan as the Latics were relegated to the Championship.

Now Obertan has left England, seemingly for good, with France Football, via Get French Football, reporting that he's in advanced talks with Bulgarian side Levski Sofia.

Reports in his home country reckon that the Frenchman has already undergone a medical at the Bulgarian club and is expected to sign a two year deal.

Sofia are certainly more used to winning trophies than their soon to be new signing is although they haven't won the league since 2009 or the Bulgarian cup since 2007.

Fellow former Wigan Athletic player Jordi Gomez signed for the same team, who finished third in the league last season, earlier in the summer.

We know a lot more about Obertan than when he first came to England, it's just that now we know how bad he is!
