Moments before opening his Manchester United account, Jose Mourinho gave Romelu Lukaku a a pep talk and the manager has revealed exactly what he said following the victory in the States.

United continued their winning form over in America as they beat Real Salt Lake 2-1 which preceded their victory over the weekend as they comfortably beat LA Galaxy 5-2.

After going behind against RSL, Mourinho's charges fought back to eventually win the game courtesy of goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lukaku.

And after recording another win on tour, the Portuguese boss was pleased with his £75 million recruit.

"I think it's just nice for him. But not important for me," Mourinho said in the post-match press conference.

He also detailed the words of encouragement to the Belgium striker during a water break.

"When he came for the water before he scored the goal, I told him, 'I love everything you do on the pitch, don't be worried about scoring or not scoring, because it's not important.'"

Words of wisdom from Mourinho.

Lukaku provided a glimpse of his ability to hold up the ball and link up with the attackers for Mkhitaryan's goal.

His performance caught the eye of his new boss who continued to praise him following the game.

"He holds the ball so well, he plays one touch, two touch so well. He assists, he moves, he gets behind people, he attacks crosses, he works when the team loses the ball, he presses well," Mourinho added.

"I like everything he does, and for me he is easy to feel it because he was my player four years ago or something like that. His evolution was great. He is now a top striker. The goal is just a detail, not important."

Mourinho will now renew his fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola as they lock horns on the early hours of Friday morning as United tangle with City in Houston, Texas.
