Only one Premier League goalkeeper features in Europe's top 10 for most clean sheets this season

Only one Premier League goalkeeper features in Europe's top 10 for most clean sheets this season

Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer tops the list.

Nick Pope is the only Premier League goalkeeper to feature in Europe's top 10 for most clean sheets this season.

The 31-year-old England international, who joined Newcastle from Burnley last year in a £10 million deal, has been an ever-present member of Eddie Howe's side this season.

So far, he has kept six clean sheets in all competitions for the Magpies in games against Brentford, AC Milan, Sheffield United, Manchester City, Burnley and Crystal Palace.

Pope's impressive record means he features alongside the likes of Wojciech Szczesny and Alexander Nubel when it comes to keeping the most clean sheets in Europe's top five leagues this season.

As per Transfermarkt, Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who joined the Serie A club from Bayern Munich this summer, tops the charts with seven clean sheets in 11 games.

Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen, meanwhile, has kept seven clean sheets in 12 games.

Poland U21 international Marcin Bulka is another one of Europe's top performers this season with six clean sheets in nine games and sits ahead of Pope in the standings.

Mike Maignan, Juan Musso, Stole Dimitrievski and Lukasz Skorupski also make up the top 10 list.

Earlier this year, Nick Pope was hailed as the "best goalkeeper in the world" by Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes after he kept a 10th successive clean sheet.

Eddie Howe added at the time: "I can’t speak highly enough of him, I can’t praise him enough and I can’t rate him highly enough. He’s a brilliant shot stopper and I think he’s in a very good place currently.”

Despite his success, Pope recently said he'll urge his kids not to follow in his footsteps as a goalkeeper.

“When you are a keeper and you are thick skinned. Every keeper makes mistakes and does something they shouldn’t and it ends in a goal," he said via The Mirror.

“I won’t tell my little one to be a goalie when they grow up. There is not much pleasure in it at times. Part of being a goalkeeper is showing character and in a really weird way I enjoy coming back from those moments.”
