Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann set to leave two legends out of Euro 2024 squad in hugely controversial move

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann set to leave two legends out of Euro 2024 squad in hugely controversial move

Germany will host Euro 2024, which gets underway on June 14.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is set to take the ruthless decision of leaving two legends out of his squad for Euro 2024.

Hosts Germany will head into this summer's tournament as one of the favourites to win, despite their inconsistent form in recent years.

The three-time winners are currently third favourites with the bookies, behind only England and France, and will be hoping home advantage pays off this summer.

Nagelsmann's task of picking a squad for the tournament was made slightly easier last month when UEFA voted to increase squads from 23 to 26 players.

Despite that increase, Nagelsmann is set to leave out two legends of German football out of his squad, according to reports in Germany.

BILD claim that Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, 35, will not be included in the squad.

That is despite his impressive form for Dortmund, who will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on June 1.

Hummels was also part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is also set to be left out of the squad, according to German reporter Kerry Hau.

It is less surprising than Hummels' omission. Goretzka, 29, has struggled for form and was left out of Germany’s squad in the last international break.

Nagelsmann will formally announce his squad for Euro 2024 on Thursday, although seven players have already been confirmed.

The German FA (DFB) used celebrities, influencers and fans to reveal the first seven names in the squad ahead of the official announcement.

Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck was the first to be revealed on Sunday along with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic and Germany captain, Manuel Neuer.

Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, Stuttgart winger Chris Fuhrich and Eintracht Frankfurt central defender Robin Koch were confirmed later in the day.

Germany face Ukraine and Greece in friendlies next month ahead of the tournament.

They will then take on Scotland in the opening game of the Euros on June 14, with Nagelsmann's side facing Hungary (June 19) and Switzerland (June 23) in their final group games.
