Throwback: When An MMA Fighter Won A Fight With The Walls Of Jericho

Throwback: When An MMA Fighter Won A Fight With The Walls Of Jericho

THIS STORY WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON 1ST OCTOBER, 2017

There are a lot of similarities between MMA and professional wrestling than a lot of MMA purists would like to admit.

Conor McGregor, the UFC's biggest star, has basically stolen the persona of 80's and 90's Ric Flair to become what the trash-talking phenomenon that he is today, while the likes of Ken Shamrock, Brock Lesnar, Four Horsewomen member Shayna Baszler and Matt Riddle have had success in both worlds. CM Punk did in the squared circle, not so much in the Octagon.

You also see a lot of the same holds and submissions utilised in both environments, rear-naked chokes, kimura locks, omoplata and armbars to name just a few.

What we have never seen, until now, is an MMA fighter using a 'Boston Crab' submission, perhaps better known as 'The Walls Of Jericho' - the move elevated by six-time world champion Chris Jericho.

However, last night during the Full Contact Contender 19 event in Bolton, Jonno Mears channeled his inner Y2J by putting his opponent Aaron Jones away with the deadly submission.

Middleweight Mears, hailing from Rochdale, now boasts a 2-0 MMA record after picking up his latest victory via the unusual but utterly brilliant move.

The pro-wrestling style maneuver has gone viral instantly and garnered plenty of reactions across social media, with Jericho himself, undoubtedly one of the all-time greats, even weighing in on his finishing move being used to devastating effect.

We really hope this is the start of a new gimmick where Mears just keeps beating everyone courtesy of pro wrestling submissions. Sharpshooters, Figure Four Leg Locks, Regal Stretch, Torture Rack, the lot.
