WWE Raw Women's Champion Asuka Suggests Match With Shayna Baszler At Summerslam
WWE RAW Women's Champion Asuka has revealed that she would welcome a challenge from Shayna Baszler at this year's Summerslam.
Asuka has reigned as champion on the red brand since May and will defend her title against Sasha Banks this weekend at The Horror Show at Extreme Rules.
However, fans have begun to look towards potential future opponents for 'The Empress of Tomorrow' and Bayzler stands out to the women herself.
When asked about 'The Queen of Spades' recent return on a conference call with the help of translator and former WWE superstar Funaki, Asuka explained:
"Shayna is a very tough wrestler and is quite skilled.
"We are very similar in the way we perform, with our submissions and she would definitely be a tough opponent.
"Maybe at Summerslam, in a big event? It's something to think about!"
Another woman that Asuka has great interest in facing is NXT superstar Rhea Ripley.
The 23-year-old is a recent NXT Women's Champion and one of the hottest stars currently on the brand.
Asuka added that she would like to face Ripley at WWE Evolution 2 [WWE's all-female pay-per-view] if it happens.
"Five years ago compared to now, so much has changed with women's wrestling and we can show the WWE Universe what the division can do.
"If I could have an opponent at the next Evolution, it would be Rhea Ripley."
She also explained 'The Nightmare' is someone she'd face if she returned to NXT, which she referred to as 'The Asuka Show.'
However, Asuka's current tag team partner Kairi Sane isn't out of the conversation and a match between the two interests Asuka greatly.
"Kairi is very special to me. She brings out the best in me and I love being around her. When I am finished with Sasha, I want to face Kairi next!
"Kairi and I have never faced each other in WWE or in Japan or anywhere else. So that match would be really special."
This week is the five year anniversary of WWE's women's evolution, which marked a new era for women's wrestling in the promotion.
The term 'Diva' was abandoned and female superstars began to receive more opportunities in prominent roles.
Asuka has been at the forefront of the women's division for all five years, in NXT as well as on RAW and SmackDown.
The Osaka-native has won every title available, as well as the Royal Rumble and Money In The Bank contract.
However, she revealed her most precious win is her NXT Women's Championship triumph - but had special words for her most recent title, which she received following previous champion Becky Lynch's pregnancy announcement.
"The NXT title, but the RAW Women's Championship also stands out because it was such a magical moment to share with Becky Lynch.
"Our worlds changed, and I became so busy and kind of became one of the faces of WWE.
"It is an honour to be RAW Women's Champion and it was a magical way to receive the title."
She then stressed that 'The Man' would have a chance at the title she was never pinned for if she ever returns.
"Definitely, Becky will be [one of] the first opponents when she comes back."
