Roman Reigns could be returning to in-ring WWE action sooner than most fans had expected after he announced his return on Monday.

The WWE superstar initially left the company in October after he revealed that he was battling leukaemia -- relinquishing the WWE Universal Championship in the process -- but the 'Big Dog' confirmed that he had beaten his illness on Raw.

According to the Daily Mirror, WWE has already mapped out his return to action and will put those plans into motion at the upcoming Fastlane pay-per-view.

The newspaper reports that WWE will reunite The Shield, bringing Reigns back together with Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

WWE teased the possibility of bringing the stable back together on Raw, with Reigns and Rollins coming to the aid of Ambrose during an attack from Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and Bobby Lashley.

It's expected that WWE will book The Shield against the trio for Fastlane, but Cageside Seats reports that Braun Strowman could be added to the team of McIntyre, Corbin and Lashley.

However, the publication does add that another superstar could partner alongside The Shield to even the odds.

The Shield reunion might be a one-off special for the PPV, especially as Rollins will compete against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 35.

Ambrose will leave the company in April after WWE said that he would not be renewing his contract (although this could be part of an ongoing storyline angle).

Meanwhile, WrestleMania 35 is reportedly the stage when Reigns, real name Leati Joseph Anoaʻi, will make his solo return against a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent.

Following his return on Raw, Reigns shared a heartfelt message on Instagram by thanking his family for their support during his battle with leukaemia.

"I want to say thank you to my mum, thank you to my family, also to my children but most of all thank you to my wife," he said.

"Along with everyone else who's sent their support and prayers I just don't feel like I'd be in this position."

Fastlane will take place on 10th March at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
