Conor McGregor Responds To Rafael Dos Anjos Call Out

Rafael dos Anjos was quick to call out Conor McGregor on Saturday night, and the former two weight UFC champion is happy to face the Brazilian.

The former UFC lightweight champion returned to 155 lbs on Saturday, having previously fought at welterweight for the past three years, and beat Paul Felder on a split decision.

After the win Dos Anjos sent a message to fellow former lightweight champ McGregor, saying, "I think if Khabib is really retired, it will leave the division wide open.

"If you look to the contenders, I think only me and Conor, we are the only real champions in that division.

"Everybody else is all interim champions. I think if the division is open, me and Conor is the fight to make."

It didn't take McGregor too long to reply to the call out and the Notorious took to Twitter to say he'd be up for the fight, once he'd fought Dustin Poirier, which is expected to take early in 2021, although it's yet to be confirmed.

McGregor and Dos Anjos haven't previously fought but, as the pictures the Irishman used in his social media post suggest, they did come close.

The pair were supposed to fight at UFC 196 for the lightweight title but the champion had to pull out with an injury, which led to Nate Diaz facing McGregor instead, at welterweight.

That would see the then featherweight champion be handed his first loss but he beat Diaz in a rematch and eventually won the lightweight title at UFC 205 that November, beating Eddie Alvarez, who had taken the title from Dos Anjos months earlier.

Dos Anjos came up against his own last minute replacement at the weekend. He was initially meant to face Islam Makhachev, with the pair originally scheduled to fight last month before a positive Covid-19 test from the former champ.

Makhachev pulled out of the rearranged fight earlier this week and Paul Felder stepped in with just five days notice.

The 36-year-old was originally due to be on commentary on the night but took the fight at ridiculously short notice and cut the weight in time.

Dos Anjos, perhaps unsurprisingly, won the fight to set up a pursuit to win his former title back.
