Conor McGregor's Coach John Kavanagh Responds To Fan's Criticism

McGregor has been with his coach for his whole UFC career but there's some suggestion he should change following defeat to Khabib.

Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh has come under some criticism for the loss against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 now he's hit back at fans for telling the Notorious to change coach.

A fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov was always going to be the toughest test in Conor McGregor's UFC career to date. The undefeated Russian wasn't a 26-0 champion for nothing after all and so the fight proved to be difficult.

McGregor was able to get his own offence in at times, landing with some decent shots, but he wasn't able take Khabib to the mat and spent most of the fight on his back, defending his position.

In the fourth round he could defend no more and the Eagle got the Notorious to tap out with a reverse choke hold. Of course ever since then the actual fight itself has played second fiddle to all the fallout.

The loss was only the Irishman's fourth in his MMA career but his second in four fights in UFC and some fans have suggested he should change coaches. John Kavanagh isn't having any of it though, hitting back on social media:

Changing coaches is nothing new in combat sports and often fighters do need a bit of a refresh but Kavanagh makes a good point about being with someone long term. In recent times it feels like boxers change coaches after one loss.

McGregor needn't worry too much. In March 2016 he lost to Nate Diaz in similar fashion, also a rear choke hold submission, but bounced back with a win in their rematch.

Exactly where the Notorious goes from here is up in the air. There are rumours he could return to boxing, a rematch with Khabib is possible, a fight against Tony Ferguson could also be on the cards whilst a third chapter against Diaz would also be an exciting prospect.

McGregor and Kavanagh couldn't stop Khabib but there's 26 other men who tried and failed too.
