The ball is now in Conor McGregor's court after former UFC middleweight champion Anderson 'Spider' Silva accepted the Irish fighter's challenge.

Ahead of his fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, McGregor said he would be interested in fighting Silva, later calling the 43-year-old a 'legend of the game' and a potentially 'great' opponent.

"You know what would be another great one? Anderson Silva." Conor McGregor told ESPN when asked about who he wanted to fight next.

"I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout. I swear to God. Anderson is a legend in the game. What's the difference between him and Georges? Same damn thing. I'm going to do fights that interest me or have meaning."

McGregor has been linked with a flurry of potential opponents since his defeat to Khabib, but it looks increasingly likely that Silva will go head-to-head with the Irish fighter.

Silva can officially return to the Octogan from November 10 onward after serving his one year suspension for a failed USADA drugs test.

Now, it looks like the 43-year-old wants to fight Conor McGregor in what could be one of the biggest UFC fights in history.

"I'm waiting because I accept the challenge for Conor." Silva told TMZ.

"I think UFC President Dana White needs to think about this because it's two big guys in this sport. Two big names - yes, absolutely, two big legends. And, why not?"

When asked about what weight they could fight at, Silva said:

"I think 180 for me is good. I think for Conor too. Because it's a super fight, it's not about weight class."

The fact that two former UFC champions could go head-to-head in the future is something we just can't help being excited about.

MAKE IT HAPPEN, UFC!
