One of the absolute basics of combat sports is to protect yourself at all times but Spike Carlyle fell foul of that last night during his bout with Billy Quarantillo at UFC on ESPN 9.
After coming off the blocks in wild fashion from the very off, Carlyle had his opponent on the ground and was pummelling him with strikes when he seemingly presumed the bell had tolled for the end of the first round.
"The Alpha Ginger" made one of the worst mistakes a fighter could possibly make when got up and turned his back on Quarantillo.
As he walked back to the opposite side of the Octagon, he was dropped by a left hook from behind from Quarantillo - who got a last bit of offence in before the round was over.
The two fighters left everything inside the Octagon in the back and forth three-round war, before Quarantillo took a unanimous decision victory in the catchweight bout in Las Vegas.

All three judges scored it 29-28 in Quarantillo's favour to give him his second win in UFC and a seventh consecutive win overall.
"That was a wild fight," Quarantillo said post-fight, as per MMA Fighting.
"I loved that one. You bet your ass in the next one, I'm going for the kill."
