Tony Ferguson has shown off his facial injuries after absorbing some serious punishment in the UFC 249 main event on Saturday night.

'El Cucuy' was hit with a ridiculous 143 significant strikes in his defeat at the hands of Justin Gaethje, including 100 strikes to the head in the lightweight bout.

The stoppage came in the fifth and final round when referee Herb Dean decided the valiant Ferguson had taken enough punishment for one night.

A couple of days removed from the five-round war, Ferguson's face now looks an absolute mess. He posted a photo of himself and his other half in the Jacksonville hospital he was taken to following the fight, with his face severely swollen, cut and bruised.

MMA Fighting reported that Ferguson suffered a broken orbital bone in the bout, which was his first defeat following 12 straight victories inside the Octagon.

UFC president Dana White felt Ferguson wasn't his usual self in the bout having had to cut weight twice due to plans being nixed, but still paid tribute to the 36-year-old withstanding a plethora of stiff shots.

"The guy isn't human. He's got a chin," White said in the UFC 249 post-fight press conference.

"Nobody takes Gaethje's punches like that - nobody I've seen since I've been watching Gaethje fight. But this kid did.

"Tony took a lot of damage tonight. Not only did he take a lot of damage, he took damage from a guy who f**king hits like a truck, a guy who hits very hard, and usually knocks people unconscious when he hits people."

Ferguson will now have to wait a little longer to finally lock horns with Khabib Nurmagomedov after five postponements, with Gaethje next in line after claiming the interim lightweight belt.

Khabib was watching the fight closely, however, and sent out a classy tweet to his rival Ferguson.
