Rafael dos Anjos has urged Conor McGregor to make a stunning U-turn on his MMA retirement and make a sensational return to the octagon against him.

The 35-year-old Brazilian-American was initially scheduled to defend the UFC lightweight championship against McGregor at UFC 196 in 2016.

But Dos Anjos was pulled out of the fight the month before due to a broken foot he sustained in training.

The former lightweight champ has now taken to social media and put himself forward as a potential opponent for McGregor, saying 'f**k this retirement s**t.'

Dos Anjos tweeted: "Let's do it @TheNotoriousMMA if you're looking for a fight I'm the guy. 155, 165 or 170 you know I'm always game. F**k this retirement s**t."

McGregor would climb up to welterweight after the Dos Anjos fight fell through and faced Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016.

Dos Anjos hit out at McGregor's decision at the time after he chose to face Diaz ahead of Donald Cerrone, who the 'Notorious' would face in his UFC return back in January.

McGregor, 31, stunned the MMA world last week when he announced his retirement from the sport.

The Irish superstar, who has retired three times in the space of four years, later claimed that he had become "bored" of MMA and was 'not excited' by the sport anymore.

"The game just does not excite me, and that's that," McGregor said.

"All this waiting around. There's nothing happening. I'm going through opponent options, and there's nothing really there at the minute. There's nothing that's exciting me.

"They should have just kept the ball rolling. I mean, why are they pushing [Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje] back to September?

"You know what's going to happen in September, something else is going to happen in September, and that's not going to happen. I laid out a plan and a method that was the right move, the right methods to go with.

"And they always want to baulk at that and not make it happen or just drag it on. Whatever I say, they want to go against it to show some kind of power. They should have just done the fight -- me and Justin for the interim title -- and just kept the ball rolling."
