Colby Covington has intensified his rivalry with Dustin Poirier by predicting that the "washed-up" UFC star will be "sparked again in the first round" by Conor McGregor.

Poirier, 31, will look to avenge his 2014 defeat to McGregor when the pair collide next weekend at UFC 257 on 'Fight Island' in Abu Dhabi.

However, the American UFC fighter's relationship with former teammate Covington has turned sour.

Covington, who defeated Tyron Woodley at UFC Vegas 11 last September, previously called out Poirier for a fight and said the 'Diamond' was "scared" to step into the octagon with him.

Speaking ahead of UFC 257, 'Chaos' once again pulled no punches towards Poirier in his prediction as he told his rival to retreat to his "safe space."

Covington told Submission Radio: "My best fake friend, Dustin 'Soirier.'

"All I got to say, guys, is make sure you guys got the Kleenex ready at the press conference because you know Dustin 'Soirier' is gonna break down on the mic, he's gonna cry to the world, get everybody feel sympathy and feel bad for him.

"He's gonna get sparked again in the first round because he's completely washed-up and has no chin anymore and no heart. It's not going to be competitive.

"I just think Conor's gonna just spark him first round. Just get the Kleenex ready because Dustin's gonna be crying up a storm in the press conference and getting everybody feeling bad for me, 'Oh, wah, wah, feel bad for me. I didn't accomplish my dream.'

"Yeah, because you're a b***h, you didn't work hard enough for it.

"What is up with society these days? People think that everybody should get a participation trophy, you know.

"Dustin needs his safe space, man. Go in your safe space, Dustin."

Poirier, who bounced back from his defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov with a win over Dan Hooker, has made a chilling prediction that he wants both McGregor and himself to be "dripping blood and hurting and suffering early in the fight."
