Footage of a young Nate Diaz competing in an unsanctioned MMA bout has resurfaced online, and it gives a fascinating insight into his beginnings as a budding fighter.

Diaz, who is reportedly 17-years-old at the time of recording, goes up against a much older and bigger opponent in Robert Limon from Team Kihon, California.

You can see the footage below:

Despite the obvious age gap between the pair, the Stockton-born fighter oozes confidence in the opening seconds of the fight as he throws a classic check-hook.

Nate proceeds to unload a number of his soon-to-be iconic Stockton Slaps before an uncharacteristic early takedown.

Limon reacts well and applies a brief headlock but the skill level of his opponent is clear to see.

Diaz moves into a side mount to prevent a tighter lock and blocks the re-guard with his knee before taking control with a headlock of his own.

The teenager then clinches his opponent's arm, connecting into an impressive straight armbar.

Limon taps and the crowd go wild as friends and family surround the area. Diaz is declared the winner, his arm is raised by the referee and the rest is, as they say, history.

Two years later, 'The Stockton Slugger' would go on to make his pro-MMA debut at WEC Fight, where he would win by submission in the third round against Alejandro Garcia.

Garcia, who was riding a three-fight win streak into his WEC debut, was the first of a number of big wins for the American.

Who should he fight next in the Octagon? Well, earlier this week, Diaz responded to a callout from Dustin Poirier over Twitter and fans were left purring about a potential bout between the pair.

Here's how it went down over social media.

Who do you think Diaz should fight next? Would you like to see him face off against Dustin Poirier?
