Francis Ngannou asked Jon Jones how "real it seemed" after the UFC legend pictured himself at heavyweight during the Ovince Saint Preux fight.
Jones, 32, has cleared out the competition in the light heavyweight class and has long been touted to make the move to heavyweight.
The MMA star took to Twitter and said it was "weird seeing" Preux fight at heavyweight against Ben Rothwell at a UFC event on Wednesday.
"Man it was weird seeing OSP fight at heavyweight, made it seem so much more real for me," Jones wrote on Twitter.
"Especially knowing he was at 240lbs. With a little more cardio, he would've been [what] I was visualizing myself as him that whole fight."
Jones' tweet caught the attention of Ngannou, who scored a sensational first-round KO victory over Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC 249 last weekend.
The 33-year-old Cameroonian UFC star responded to Jones with a simple message: "How real it seemed to you my friend?!"
Jones wasted no time in firing back at the 'Predator' and said that "all that power means nothing when your hay makers [sic] are too slow."
'Bones' tweeted: "Seemed so real Francis, all that power means nothing when your hay makers [sic] are too slow. I'm not most my friend."
One UFC fan called out Jones on Twitter and argued that he would never agree to fight Ngannou.
And the UFC light heavyweight champ hit back by saying he has "no reason to doubt my chin or abilities."
When another fan asked Jones how he would defeat Ngannou in a mega-showdown, 'Bones' responded: "By just being myself."
Jones, who hasn't fought since his win over Dominick Reyes in February, has been linked with a move to the heavyweight division for quite some time.
And 'Bones' recently teased on Twitter that he could climb up to the weight class after meeting one important condition.
