The hype behind Conor McGregor's long-awaited return to the octagon has been turned up a notch after BT Sport dropped a brilliant new promo.

The 31-year-old UFC superstar has been out of action since his devastating defeat to fierce rival Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in 2018.

But McGregor will return to MMA action on 18th January in a welterweight clash against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246.

BT Sport has cranked up the hype factor surrounding the Irishman's return in its latest promo, which features an archival interview with McGregor spliced with footage from his path to stardom.

But the promo also touches on his controversial moments outside of the octagon and the criticisms that have been directed towards him across his illustrious fighting career.

BT Sport tweeted: "Time to turn the clock back. Time to silence the critics.

"Will the real @TheNotoriousMMA please stand up?"

UFC fans have praised the latest promo for the upcoming clash, with one person calling it the "best" one produced so far.

One Twitter user posted: "Another winning BT Sport promo."

While Youssef Hannoun said: "incredible work."

A third fan simply wrote: "holy s**t."

And ChadTraddington added: "best promo by far."

Cerrone, who has a history with McGregor dating back to 2015, has sent a clear-cut warning to the Irishman about his well-known trash-talking antics.

The 36-year-old UFC veteran told MMA Fighting: "He's the best at it.

"The thing is, you'd really have to go low, talk about my grandma or my kid and then it would put it on another level. You understand what I'm saying?

"Then I'll just come f**k you up in the lobby type s**t. I don't think it's ever going to go that way.

"He understands that. We're fighting, he can talk about that all he wants, but don't low blow."
