Conor McGregor and Urijah Faber had an intense altercation before UFC 189 which led to the Irishman being "manhandled" by the UFC bantamweight fighter.

McGregor and Faber crossed paths prior to the UFC 189 weigh-in back in July 2015.

'The Notorious' was weighing in for his UFC 189 clash with Chad Mendes when he was suddenly involved in a heated backstage altercation.

Moments before tipping the scales, McGregor ran into Mendes' coach and then-active UFC bantamweight Faber who claims to have "manhandled" the MMA star.

McGregor ruffled Faber's hair before the pair engaged in a brief grappling exchange which saw the former WEC champion manoeuvre him against the wall.

Faber spoke about the incident which ended with a "p**sed off" McGregor.

"That [first incident] was completely off the cuff. I don't even know what it was," he said.

"I talked to Conor about it, too. I was like, 'What was that?' and he just said, 'Eh, I don't know.' It started out kind of playing and turned out what it was.

"That happened again. It happened again a couple of days ago. They didn't have any cameras on us, we're giving each other crap and the next thing you know we're testing each other a little bit. Then we're like manhandling each other. It always ends with him getting p**sed off. He likes them until the end when he's getting manhandled. Then he doesn't like it.

"The last one was kind of funny. His guy Tom [Egan] had to come in and be like, 'Alight guys let's break it up.' I feel like it was all in good fun for the most part. We both like to fight. That's what we do."

McGregor, who was making the extreme cut to featherweight, went onto stop Mendes to become the interim-UFC featherweight champion.

McGregor and Faber then renewed their rivalry when they coached against each other on The Ultimate Fighter 22.
