What Khabib Nurmagomedov's Trainer Told Him To Do Before Fourth Round Win

What Khabib Nurmagomedov's Trainer Told Him To Do Before Fourth Round Win

Mendez’s words of wisdom to Khabib Nurmagomedov before the fourth round could have been vital in his win against Conor McGregor.

Khabib Nurmagomedov retained his UFC Lightweight Championship and extended his unbeaten record when he defeated Conor McGregor at UFC 229.

The Russian took the Irishman to the fourth round before he successfully locked in a submission hold and claimed the ultimate bragging rights.

Before the start of the fourth round, however, Nurmagomedov was able to regroup with his camp and received some handy advice from his trainer, Javier Mendez.

According to GiveMeSport, this is the exchange that the two had before the start of the round:

Mendez: "He's tired, brother. He's tired. Don't let him work, don't let him work. Just pressure him."

Nurmagomedov: "This is the fourth round?"

Mendez: "This is the fourth round. Just drink some water."

Nurmagomedov to referee Herb Dean: "Three times he do it [hook the gloves]. Three times... You say to him: 'Two times. One more time you lose a point' and he still [does it]."

Mendez: "Concentrate on the fight."

And the rest is now history, right?

It's not surprising that the aftermath of the match has stolen much of the limelight away from Nurmagomedov's latest victory, especially when the Russian decided to climb over the cage and clash with McGregor's team.

Three members of Khabib's camp were arrested after they supposedly attacked McGregor, though recent footage shows that he might have been involved with kick-starting the fight.

For Khabib's part, he took the time at his post-match press conference to apologise for his actions.
