UFC bantamweight Irwin Rivera was arrested and jailed on Thursday on two accounts of attempted murder.

Online records per ESPN show Rivera was arrested in the afternoon and booked by the Boynton Beach Police Department in Florida.

A spokesperson alleges Rivera stabbed his two sisters and left them with multiple wounds before saying, "I killed my sisters."

Both siblings, aged 22 and 33 respectively, were found alive but injured and are now in hospital. The 22-year-old had wounds on her back, head and arm, while the older sister had back, face, arms and hands injuries.

The report states both were staying with their brother and woke up to him repeatedly stabbing them.

Rivera attacked his sisters with a brass knuckle knife while sleeping and fled the scene. Some time later when tracked down by officers, he said it was down to a "higher power."

UFC have addressed the incident and explained in a statement: "UFC is aware of the recent incident involving Irwin Rivera and subsequently received information from his management that he has been exhibiting behavior consistent with mental health issues.

"The allegations are extremely troubling and the organization is currently gathering additional information.

"The investigation is ongoing and any potential next steps including disciplinary action or medical attention will be determined upon the conclusion.

"Furthermore, UFC has informed Rivera's management that he will not be offered a bout at this time."

Rivera, who is nicknamed 'The Beast' in the Octagon, signed with UFC back in May and has had three fights with the promotion.

His last bout came in a losing effort on the undercard of UFC Fight Night: Covington vs. Woodley in September against Andre Ewell.
