Tony Ferguson insists he's next in line for a UFC title shot and says Conor McGregor should fight Mark Wahlberg following the Irish star's latest controversial incident.

Ferguson has finally reacted to McGregor punching an elderly man in an Irish bar and the American fighter is adamant his rival won't swoop in and steal his shot at UFC gold.

"No way man, the fans wouldn't have it, they'd put up too much of a fight," the No.1 lightweight contender said.

"He's been fighting old men lately, he's trying to fight Mark Wahlberg. Maybe that's the fight for him. The dude's got a couple of things, making his money, doing his thing. I don't know if he wants to fight anymore, but he is not my concern."

That Wahlberg line is in reference to McGregor's call out of the Hollywood actor following the mega-sale of the UFC.

McGregor expressed his regret over the whiskey dispute in a revealing interview and he also called out Ferguson. But the 35-year-old veteran isn't interested in fighting the former 'champ-champ'.

"He's like one of those ex-girlfriends," he added. "I stopped worrying about that. Now he's mentioning my name? Get the f**k out of here.

"If push comes to shove, I see him fighting the loser of this next fight this weekend. If you want to keep up with the rankings, we have to do it the right way. Maybe I'll give him a shot (if he beats loser of UFC 242)."

Ferguson's on an impressive 12-fight win streak which includes victories over Rafael dos Anjos, Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone, among others.

While it's not confirmed, it appears he'll fight the winner of UFC 242's main-event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier.
