Diaz, 35, hasn't fought since his TKO defeat to Jorge Masvidal for the BMF title at UFC 244 back in November 2019.
But the UFC president is in talks with the Stockton slugger about his comeback and has teased a lightweight showdown for 2021.
When asked if he could make Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson, White replied: "We're working on a Nate Diaz fight right now.
"And it is not Tony, but if we get it done, I think you're gonna like it."
The Mac Life's Oscar Willis continued to press White and questioned whether Diaz would return at welterweight or lightweight.
White said: "Lightweight - 55."

The 51-year-old, who is currently out in Abu Dhabi for the latest 'Fight Island' series, also said that a win would put him in a really good position while playing down a trilogy fight with the returning Conor McGregor.
He outpointed Anthony Pettis on his UFC return before suffering a defeat to Masvidal in his last Octagon outing.
Though it appears the UFC veteran will end his hiatus and return to action later this year.
He hasn't competed at lightweight since December 2015 when he beat Michael Johnson.
