Conor McGregor wants the knee to the head of a downed opponent legalised in MMA after sharing footage of landing the illegal move on Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor posted a clip of his UFC grudge match with Nurmagomedov who had him controlled on the ground.

During their ground exchange, the Irishman hit the Russian with a knee to the eye socket - an illegal move in MMA.

Though he believes this strike should be "enshrined" and allowed within the sport.

He posted a series of tweets, pleading for the destructive maneuver to be legalised.

On Twitter, he wrote: "The knee into the eye socket was illegal yes, from this position. A beauty tho. Never before seen shot. Like many of my shots.

"I use the mount defence leg as a spring board, loading the knee below it. Release and straight to the eye socket. Smashed it in! @joerogan. Hey Dana."

In another tweet, he added: "This strike should not be illegal. Should actually be enshrined! Look at him cower his head after it and keep it tucked. Kept honest! Guy is latched onto my arm not letting go. Everything bar biting and gouging should be permitted here. Are we fighting or what are we doing here?"

McGregor then tweeted former MMA referee 'Big' John McCarthy.

"What do you think Big John? Should this strike be legalized? Your pal, Mr. tasty shots," he asked.

It's yet another shot aimed at Nurmagomedov amid talks of a blockbuster rematch.

'The Notorious' is in discussions with the UFC to face Dustin Poirier on January 23.

The bout could take place at welterweight but the UFC lightweight champion insists it has to be at 155lbs if he wants a title shot.

"If he (Conor McGregor) beats him (Dustin Poirier) in 155, it makes sense," the 28-0 fighter told Mike Swick.

"But if they fight in 170, how can you fight in 170 and then next fight be in 155."

'The Eagle' continued: "They want to make everything easy.

"If you want to take it the easy way, you will never deserve another title shot.

"Remember before I fought him, I said 'I am going to make you humble and I am going to put you on the line' and now after two years people understand my words.

"I am going to put him on the line and I am going to make the decision. If he fights 170, bye bye."
