Conor McGregor has paid tribute to UFC legend Chuck Liddell after a viral photo surfaced online.

McGregor made a triumphant return to the Octagon after beating Donald Cerrone at UFC 246.

And the Irishman showered praise on Liddell who received his UFC Hall of Fame jacket during UFC 246 fight week.

He posted a picture of the pair 12 years ago at a UFC event accompanied with an image of McGregor weighing in for his comeback fight, with Liddell in the crowd.

"Thank you @ChuckLiddell! Your work inside the UFC's famed Octagon inspired me to chase my own fighting dreams, and for that I am forever grateful to you! Thank you and big congrats on your hall of fame entry #ProperUFCOG," he wrote on social media.

Liddell then responded to McGregor's post: "These pics are awesome! Congratulations on your epic return to the cage! You are a bad ass my friend and it was an honor to be there for your explosive win and to see your tremendous sportsmanship and class after the fight. Absolutely well done," he wrote on Instagram.

Liddell backed Cerrone to beat McGregor prior to their Las Vegas showdown.

"I think if 'Cowboy' can come out and convince him he's going to take him down, get after him, and get him guessing whether or not they're going to go up or down, I think 'Cowboy' can do it.

"He's always going to be tough. He's always going to be a tough striker," Liddell said of McGregor. "But people have that question whether or not he's been struggling with some issues lately. Is he really back? As strong as he was?

"I'm a big fan of 'Cowboy'. I'm hoping he comes out with the win."

But, of course, McGregor wasted no time in putting Cerrone away as he stopped the veteran American in just 40 seconds to record his first UFC win since 2016.

He has set his sights on fights at lightweight and welterweight as the former UFC double champion anticipates a summer return.
