Tony Ferguson has aimed a dig at fierce rival Khabib Nurmagomedov following the rumoured UFC event on May 9.

Ferguson was scheduled to face Nurmagomedov at UFC 249 this Saturday, but the Russian fighter withdrew due to the circumstances of the coronavirus outbreak.

He was then supposed to take on Justin Gaethje for the interim-UFC lightweight title until Dana White shut down the event.

But Ferguson vs. Gaethje is being targeted for May 9 and 'El Cucuy' has taken to social media to react to the new date and poked fun at the current UFC lightweight king.

"'Varsity Mentality' Professional Fight♟Prep -CSO- #ufc249 # ChampShitOnly," he wrote in a tweet.

In another tweeted, he said: "'Tiramisu Time'' You Know What Day It Is Crew, # Tiramisu Tuesday Compliments Of Good Ol'e Fathead. Still Cutting Weight #ufc249 Wanted To Give Ya Something Sweet & Neat. I'll Save Mine For After Weigh In's @RealFPJr Thanks Hermano For The Recipe -CSO-"

Ferguson is still cutting weight and says he'll make the championship weight despite the cancellation of UFC 249.

The California fighter says he's dropping weight and plans to make his contracted 155lbs as scheduled even though he has no bout this weekend.

"Still Workin' Gonna Make Weight By Friday," he wrote on Twitter, accompanied with his catchphrases, emojis and "championship weight" hashtag.

Ferguson also issued a peaceful statement in wake of the cancellation.

"You know what? I'm sure it's for a good reason," he said.

"Let's be real. I gotta keep the faith. I gotta keep this... f**k... keep this small circle close, bro, and just keep focusing on what we can control, which is our heart rate and our breathing.

"The constant is things are always gonna change. The variable is how am I gonna react to it? So we could throw that variable, baby, and we make that the constant.

"Which is why I'm gonna keep smiling, I'm gonna keep training, and you know what? I'm gonna put on some muscle. Dude, I'm skinny. I'm gonna put on some muscle. I'm gonna try my best. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna try my best. If I fall, I'll get back up."
