Ex-UFC fighter Eddie Alvarez has backed former foe Conor McGregor to beat Tony Ferguson in a mega-showdown.

Ferguson, 36, was scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov this month in a highly-anticipated clash at UFC 249.

But UFC lightweight champ Khabib was unable to leave Russia due to the coronavirus pandemic and the event has now been pushed back to next month.

Ferguson is now scheduled to face Justin Gaethje on 9th May for the interim lightweight championship in Jacksonville, Florida.

Alvarez, who suffered a second-round TKO loss to McGregor in 2016, doesn't believe that 'El Cucuy' could beat the Irish UFC superstar.

And the 36-year-old MMA fighter has also backed McGregor to win against Gaethje in a potential MMA fight.

Alvarez told theScoreMMA: "I think Conor would put Tony away. I'd like to see him fight Gaethje, but I'm off the belief he beats Gaethje, but I would like to see the fight.

"I'd still like to see it. I don't like the style matchup for him with Khabib. I don't think he has enough experience in that realm to overcome Khabib at any point."

McGregor, who is keen to avenge his 2018 defeat to Khabib, praised Ferguson for his commitment to make weight after his fight with the 'Eagle' fell through.

But Ferguson fired back at the 31-year-old Irishman and told him 'to wait for his turn' after McGregor took a swipe at him for his weigh-in.

Chael Sonnen recently suggested that UFC could still "screw" Ferguson by booking a rematch between McGregor and Khabib.

"I know everything that has been said, 'We're going to keep Conor on ice against Khabib. The winner of Khabib and Tony in September,'" the 43-year-old former UFC fighter said.

"But of course, that was believing that Khabib was going to win.

"You have to understand if that is still the plan, then that means we're getting ready to pull the screw job on Tony a second time."
