Dustin Poirier has laid down the challenge to Conor McGregor after the Irishman taunted him over the defeat he inflicted on him back at UFC 178.

Back in 2014 at the MGM Grand, McGregor beat Poirier via TKO inside two minutes and after the American called him out following his defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Notorious was sure to remind him.

The 30-year old doesn't seem too bothered about McGregor bringing it up again however, using it as fuel to try and get a second crack at him inside the Octagon.

"If it's that easy just do it again," Poirier said on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show, as per The Mac Life.

"Try and beat your record. What you get me in last time? Two minutes? Try and get me in 1:30. Let's see if you can do that."

Both Poirier and McGregor have now been dominated by Lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov and 'The Diamond' feels it's the perfect fight for Dana White and UFC to make happen.

"Why not? If we're respecting the rankings, I'm number two, he's number three. Everybody else is pretty booked up," Poirier added.

"It makes sense. We've both lost to the same guy in a world title fight. Financially it makes a lot of sense for me. If the guy's not going to fight, they gotta take him out of the rankings or he's just going to keep log-jamming an already top heavy division.

"I want to fight before my birthday, January 19. I want to have another fight before I'm 31 years old. That's just a goal of mine."

McGregor hasn't been back in the Octagon since his humbling at the hands of Khabib at UFC 229 in October but has been teasing a return near the end of the year.

Incidentally, December 14 is the date that UFC 245 at the T-Mobile Arena falls on.
