Dana White says Conor McGregor's best next move is to face the winner of the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje for the UFC lightweight title.

Gaethje became interim UFC lightweight champion and next in line for a shot at the undefeated Dagestani fighter after an impressive victory over Tony Ferguson in the UFC 249 main event last month.

'The Highlight' is now likely to face Khabib around September time to unify the titles and crown an undisputed champion.

There are lots of options mooted for McGregor, who made an emphatic return with a swift victory over Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone in January at welterweight.

But UFC president White feels his biggest asset would be best off waiting in the wings to see how Khabib-Gaethje plays out and fighting for the lightweight belt.

Speaking on Eddie Hearn & Tony Bellew's Talk The Talk podcast, White said: 'I think the best thing for him, I'm not saying this is what's going to happen, but in my opinion, he lets this Gaethje-Khabib fight play out and he fights the winner.

"I think that's the smartest move for him. But, you know him, maybe he wants to fight before that and if he does, we can figure something out. I think that is the move for him right now."

Fans are convinced that the Notorious fighter is indeed dropping back down to lightweight after seeing new pictures of him showing off his physique.

McGregor is looking a little trimmer and lean in the above image, prompting many to believe he will be returning to the 155lbs division for his next bout.
