They may have spent a fair amount of time punching each other in the face, choking each other and hurling cans of Monster at each other, but Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz share a huge mutual respect after their two wars in 2016.

And in a recent post on Instagram, the Irishman has shared his admiration for Diaz, with whom he traded victories at UFC 196 and 202, two years ago.

Diaz won the first of the pair's bouts, in March 2016, making McGregor tap out and it was the move Diaz used which sparked McGregor's praise of him in the comments section of his post.

The UFC Lightweight Champion posted a series of pictures with the caption, "Transitioning into full mount.
The second most dominant position in fighting. After back mount top."

It didn't take long for someone to reference how Diaz had used a similar move to defeat McGregor at UFC 196, commenting, "Like what [Nate Diaz] did to you yeaaaaa that's the one! I like his example better."

In turn, the Irishman responded, "Exactly. A truly beautiful position. The most intense position to be in under the lights of the entire world. Try and imagine what it would feel like. Amazing. Respect to Nate always and our trilogy will be special when we do it 100%.

"There is no rush [Nate Diaz] our trilogy will show true to us for what we are. Warriors. And respect always to you as a fan Jesse, and the fans all around the world who support and recognise our work for what it is. The truest form of unarmed combat on earth. This is as real as it gets. This is the [UFC]."

A third and final fight between McGregor and Diaz has been talked about since their rematch at UFC 202, which McGregor narrowly won with a majority decision victory in one of the greatest bouts in UFC history. McGregor has stepped back into the octagon only once since that fight, beating Eddie Alvarez three months later in Madison Square Garden to win the Lightweight Championship.

Diaz, on the other hand, hasn't fought at all since, instead biding his time for the right fight, being in no need to take any bouts he doesn't want to, given the vast amounts he pocketed for his pair of fights with McGregor. It is believed a trilogy fight with Notorious is the only bout the Stockton native is interested in.

Will we see the pair finally go at it again before the end of the year? McGregor has said he wants to step back into the octagon this year, but will have to defend his Lightweight title before another go round with Diaz, with Tony Ferguson or Khabib Nurmagomedov likely awaiting the Irishman for his next fight.
